The cockpit was quiet and dark. Only the light of the hyperspace corridor was illuminating the little room, giving it a silver-blue aura. In the pilot's seat, a man - early thirties, dark brown hair, wearing a brown leather vest over a white shirt - was apparently resting. The Exile allowed herself a small smile. Most of the crew was sleeping at this hour, except from Kreia, of course. But she couldn't close her eyes, couldn't fall asleep. There was a question she needed the answer.
The blonde woman stepped forward in the dim light, adjusting her long brown robe back on her shoulders. Small electronic noises could be heard all around. She approached the back of the pilot seat, where Atton Rand was sitting, eyes closed.
- Atton? she softly asked, not wanting to wake him up. - Something up? he replied, his eyes still closed. - I... Why do you play Pazaak in your head?
Atton turned his head around, and looked at her. At first he seemed startled, but quickly regained his natural self. He laid his head back on the pilot's seat.
- Passes the time. It's better than listing off engine sequencers, memorizing hyperspace routes, or counting ticks in the power couplings. - You're... not making any sense.
He looked back at her, and frowned. She felt a little uneasy. Something told the young Jedi Exile she had touched a nerve. But, with a smile, he added:
- Why do I play Pazaak? All right, I'll show you! - I don't really feel like playing Pazaak... - We're not playing for credits. We're playing for something else. Are you going to play or not? - All right, she said after a short moment. As long as it's not Nar Shaddaa rules! - Nope, our clothes are going to stay on! he chuckled. Take a seat. Do you want to deal, or should I?
They played several games. The Exile was trying her best to keep up, but she had never been good with cards. Atton was a born player, he spent lots of his time in cantinas playing against any patron he could find. In the end, the games finished with a score of 11 to 1, for Atton.
- Good match, he said, admitting his first defeat at her hands. Now, what are you thinking about? - That I should get a better deck, she sighed, dropping her cards on the table. - Fair enough, but that's why I play Pazaak in my head.
She gave him the most confused look she ever gave anyone. Even her old Jedi training couldn't help her figure out what he ment by that.
- Because if you don't, he continued, you've left the door opened. And anyone could walk right in.
She couldn't help but feel guilty. Half an hour ago, Kreia had shown her how to hear what people were thinking, how to gaze into another's mind. This is how she found out about him playing Pazaak alone.
- Atton, before... I felt your mind. With Kreia's help. I'm sorry. - Of course you did, he said, not looking surprised at all. You see, Jedi... light or dark... do it, more often than you'd think. But I've never heard one saying they were sorry before... that's a new house rule.
She figured he ment that everyone who tried before got bored of hearing him count cards.
- So I play Pazaak in my head. - What do you have to hide? - Nothing. I'm just someone who plays Pazaak in his head. But while I'm doing that, it's a lot harder for someone to walk in. - So you're shielding your thoughts... Kreia was wrong, you aren't completely a fool. Can you teach me how to do it? - No. I can only teach you how to play Pazaak. Do you understand what I'm saying? - Yes, I think I do. - Good, he answered, shuffling the deck for a new game. All right, I'll deal, then. If you're ever fighting someone who had the power over your mind... whether light or dark... play Pazaak. Start listing hyperspace routes. Recite engine sequencers. And when they try to use their powers on you...
He stopped for a moment. She was staring in his eyes. He seemed at that moment a lot more clever and wise than he ever did.
- ...Suddenly it's not as easy as they thought. Jedi do it all the time, and when they walk in the dark places of your mind, they'll use it to hold you by the throat.
Flashes from her past resurfaced once again. Scenes where her mentors Kavar and Atris, who she knew ever since she was a child, exiled her from the Order, using the fact she followed Revan to war against her. Atris wanted to go even further than that. Painful memories that lead her to the long several years of exile she had endured afterwards.
Atton softly cleared his throat and smiled.
- So when they do... your mind will be safe, because you'll be here with me, playing Pazaak... where they can't reach you... aimo.deviantart.com/art/K2-Pazaak-in-My-Head-22855160Will definitely take a look at it, Gerik. Thanks!
