The code streamed violently into Aaroun's code-launcher monocular as the exile leaned down into the large hole where he'd thrown hacker thru a the wall moments earlier. The exile stopped in mid-reach and began to shake violently, Aaroun quickly rolled backward and grabbed a stone from the shattered wall and gripped it tightly in his left hand. Small, red fragments of code quickly scurried from within the rock...becoming more numerous as the seconds unfolded. The exile slowly stopped shaking and regained movement in his upper body; with time running out, Aaroun rolled the rock into the feet of the exile and made a break for the nearby window. The cracking of high voltage resounded behind him as he made a quick reach for a metal case and crashed through the glass pane. The explosion that followed Aaroun out shattered the windows two floors above and two floors below the twelfth floor he'd jumped from. A red shockwave rocketed from all sides of the building and flaming debris pelted all around as Aaroun crashed into a fire escape only fifty feet from where he'd jumped.
Sirens filled the air when the subtle chirping of Aaroun's watch roused him from unconsciousness, at both ends of the alley under him were patrol cars and fire engines. He slowly sat up and realigned the code launcher over his eyes and rubbed his still bleeding skull. He pushed the button on his watch and fought to get to his feet. "...only five more minutes..." He jumped so hard the wrought steel of the fire escape broke loose from its anchors and crashed to the alley below. Aaroun landed on a nearby rooftop and watched as startled police swarmed the alley, his watch beeped again...'4:00', "shit..." Aaroun broke into a full run, leaping from rooftop to rooftop. '3:00' He jumped into the window of a nearby apartment, causing the occupants who were engaged in some intimacies to yell and scream loudly as he slid across the wood floor. Once out of the apartment, Aaroun ran up the nearby stairs...his watch beeped again '2:00'
Room 1408, Aaroun looked down both ends of the hall to assure they were empty and opened the door to heavily neglected apartment. *beep*beep*'1:00'The only signs of life in the room were boot-prints in the dusty floor and the lack of dust around the phone. He laid the case in cleared area of the dust and opened it quickly, his watch beeped successively as he hurriedly placed the phone on the receiver and picked up the phone built into the case. '0:05, 0:04, 0:03, 0:02, 0:01' the last beep of the watch didn't happen, Aaroun dissolved into the air around him.
Cold and stagnant air filled his lungs as feeling returned to Aaroun's body. He slowly reached behind his own head and removed the jack protruding from the base of his skull as he rose to a kneeling position. The low electronic hum of the transponder next to him was barely audible over the howling wind and rumbling thunder that consistently barraged the window-less holes in the walls surrounding him. He rubbed his arms vigorously, 'twelve hours and almost nothing accomplished...' he thought to himself. He looked over at the nearby terminal...'I have to find the trainman's shuttle program...'
