Okay. I kind of disappeared over the weekend from MxO. I was at LotR.
My Beta Impressions.
The character creation system is straighforward. Not that many options for making yourself unique like being able to change the generic faces but the models are very well done. Clipping doesn't seem to be a problem at all.
The intro 'tutorial' is a little rough and ready but that's okay. The game will ship with a manual after all. The combat system is the common system in use. The character classes are reworkings of the typical class system in most games. Combat is interesting most of the time. Challengeing but not impossible when fighting a single higher level mob. Pretty challenging when mobs are in groups. This is all solo of course. Things get easier in groups. The Quest system is easy to understand and if you read the descriptions in the quest menu you shouldn't get too lost. The Epic Quests are hella fun. Although I found a couple bugs along the way. I'm having problems with chapter 3 and I found a way to skip ahead to chapter 6. If I figure out what my problem is with signing into the bug system I'll report them asap. lol.
The graphics are a bit cartoony but it's not bad. I was expecting a darker look. A bit more realism. But I suppose I can't have everything eh? The atmosphere is really good. I enjoy just hanging out in front of the Prancing Pony... or even just stopping on the road and having a /smoke break. The old forest is dark and creepy. The mood music is pretty well done although a bit more variety would be nice.
The vastness of the world is amazing. We named ourselves aptly because we sure have done a lot of Travelling in The Travelling Band. They are faithful to the books are much as they can be I think. Sure some things are a bit out of place but that's okay. I tried to get to Rivendel and made it as far as the other side of the River Crossing in the book before some Mountain Bears chased me off an extremely tall cliff. I fell for a long time. lol. And died. The time it took me to get that far was considerable.
I'm not going to go too in-depth but overall my first impression of the Beta game are ... Jinkies. I haven't had that much fun in a while.
I give it four Dwarves and a hobbit out of Five.
