Decompiling is the first code crafter abilities you can acquire as a brand new 'Redpill'. First off, I will give you a list of the items and abilities you will need to complete this walkthru.
Abilities
Write Code (Level 1 to acquire)
Coder Style (Level 1 to acquire)
Tinkering (Level 1 to acquire)
Remote Proxy 1.0 (Level 1 to acquire)
Coder (Level 2 to acquire)
Decompile Items (Level 2 to acquire)
These abilities can be bought from the Coder Vendor in Uriah SW, most you should have been given when you exited training. Check your ability tree to be sure.
Tools
Item Decompiler
Can be found from the Item Vendor "Chains" in East Tabor Park {Hardline coords for Tabor East (943 0 269), "Chain" can be found at (996 1 232)}
Ok, this is very important so read carefully. When decompiling items, the tale-tale sign of success or failure is in what color the name of the item is when you mouse over it in your inventory. So, for the sake of a step-by-step exercise go to Mara and visit a clothing vendor by the name of Ka-shing (coord x: 226 - z: 2) and purchase about 3 gray baseball hats.
After that follow these steps:
Press 'i' to open your in-game inventory.
Find the three Gray Baseball Caps you purchase and put your mouse over the item (do not click it yet). You will see a popup that shows a description of that particular item.
Here's where it gets important...
Just to the right of the picture is the name of the item and the name is written in a colored text. That particular color tells you (the coder) how difficult the item will be for you manipulate. Listed in order of difficulty (just like when attacking enemies):
Purple (95% chance of failure <hardest - 5 levels or more above you>)
Red (70% chance of failure <harder - 3 to 4 levels above you>)
Orange (60% chance of failure <hard - 1 to 2 levels above you>)
Yellow (50% chance of failure <medium - at your level>)
Blue (40% chance of failure <easy- 1 to 2 levels below you>)
Green (30% chance of failure <easier- 3 to 4 levels below you>)
Gray (5% chance of failure <very easy-5 levels or more below you>)
That being said, never try to decompile something that is red or purple...you will most likely fail and will definitely lose the item if that occurs. If the item is within your ability to decompile, click it once to select it (causes the border to turn green.) Now with the item selected, go to your Item Decompiler in your hotbar and click it once.
There are three possible result when you click the Decompiler:
"Item failed to decompile" (Failure and you lost the item from your inventory)
"Item decompiled successfully, You Learned the code structure of *** " (You successfully decompiled the item and it was placed in your code vault (explained later))
"Item decompiled successfully, Code Bit ** extracted" (You successfully decompiled the item, but you already have the code structure so you gained bits for repeat decompiling.)
Revel in your success (or failure) because you just learned how to decompile. Now for a few of my personal rules and habits:
The first was explained above in that you should never attempt to decompile something that will, in all probability, fail. There are many alternatives: Store it in your inventory, Email it to yourself for future use (higher level buffed clothes/weapons) or decompiling when chances of success are better, sell it on the marketplace or to a vendor (you'll get more for it on the marketplace if it is a quality item), or give it away with priority.
I keep my coding loadout completely stationary (I do not rearrange my hotbar).
My #20 tab goes as follows:
[coder][coder style][write code][proxy4.0][tinkering][adv tinkering][daemon3.0][compiler][analyzer][decompiler][repair tool]
The only thing that changes on that bar are the remote proxy and nuker sim levels as I acquire them.
Keeping yourself ready for quick coding makes for an organization, and makes you look better when you can quickly code object for others.
