Hal paced his room on the believer base, nervous of his own plan. On his computer terminal’s screen was a document about the customs of the native Americans. In particular, an article about a ritual known as a vision quest. Recent events had led Hal to begin to question his loyalties. With Zion the way it was he was extremely unhappy with some of its decisions and actions. But then there was his devotion to the great city. There was a part of him that wanted to jump ship and join the machines. Just so he could help save Zion from itself. Another part of him was disgusted for even thinking such a thing. He was so confused that he was willing to try anything.
Now it was too late to back out. The terminal bleeped letting Hal know it was time to kick start his plan. He grabbed a bag and left his room in a hurry, heading for the hovercraft bays. At bay one was one of the patrol hovercraft sitting ready having just finished a maintenance cycle, which had had previously arranged and had, rather conveniently, agreed to take it out on a test drive.
The Hovercraft itself was a small and nippy little thing. No bigger than the Logos. While rather appropriately named the “Dainty Lady.” One of the technicians, Samson, walked down the crafts entrance ramp to great him.
“She’s all yours sir…. Are you alright?”
Hal was not feeling particularly good. Part of the ritual was to fast and go without sleep for a day before setting off on your quest. Which was usually a walk through the desert. Well there was plenty of desert around these days, but he need to get off the island and onto the Greek mainland. That way he would be all alone and able to carry on with the rest of the ritual.
“Yeah I’m fine. Well lets se how she handles then shall we?”
“Want me to tag along and run some in-flight diagnostics?”
Hal shock his head and smiled. Trying not to give anything away.
“Its ok. I can do that. You go take a break.”
The techy shrugged. Not willing to continue the augment with the prospect of a break on the horizon. Samson wandered off back into the base while Hal entered the craft and made his way to the cockpit while dumping his bag in one of the cabins. When he reached the cockpit he sat down in the pilots chair. He had to remove his false leg due to the cramped compartment of the small craft. Strapping it to the co-pilots chair Hal began with the pre-flight. The hover pods sparked to life along with the cockpit displays. He reached for and placed a pair of headphones upon his head.
“Dainty Lady to control. Request permission to get underway.”
“This is control. You are cleared to go. Remember this is a shakedown, stick to the test range and remain at port speed.”
“Roger that control.”
He replied with no actual intent to obey orders. He pulled back on the controls and the small craft lifted from its pad. For the first 10 minuets he followed regulation and carried out a proper shakedown. However when he reached a part of the course that faced the Greek mainland, Hal pushed down hard on the controls and the tiny craft accelerated at tremendous speed away from the base.
“Dainty Lady this is Control. Explain your actions! ………. Dainty Lady come in!”
Hal switched off the radio as well as the transponder beacon that allowed the base to track the ship. Speeding off in the direction of ancient Olympia, The second part of the journey was about to begin.
((and thats the start of the journy to explain where hals been. All are welcomed to join in if they wish. Oh and thanks to sky for allowing me to nick one of the crafts ;D
