It hadn't worked. The bomb in the Believers' base was a dud, and the ship - the renamed Trinity's Hope, flying Zion colors - had made it almost all the way to the docks before Kellner had sent a useless "detonate" signal. That freighter had probably hit one side of the tunnel or other and crashed violently outside the city, nothing that would be remotely dangerous to the Zionites.
A lot was running through his mind at the moment Darius had spoken into his ear, telling him the bomb hadn't gone off: Ok, no big deal, I can still go back; All that planning, all those months of making even the cypherites think I was legitimately interested in peace, all for such a spectacular failure; did the agents already find Viola and set up the meeting? I need to ask Kenna where she is; What am I going to do about all these Zionites with guns, and this dynamite strapped to my chest?
Evading them proved rather simple. He had simply backflipped off the landing and run out of Club Avalon, pulling out his phone along the way with few in pursuit. Kenna had told him she was waiting in Tabor, and no one but Hostile and Mathalos had found her. Just before his rendezvous with the agents was scheduled, Kellner stopped off by Tabor to check on his (ex?) wife. He didn't want her to know he was a redpill - that would have been disastrous - but when he arrived at the building she was being protected in, he was greeted with her tears. Their longtime friend, John Snow, had been shot and killed by one of the Tetragrammaton.
Furious, Kellner told Viola to wait for the agents to arrive, then ran to meet with the agents who were awaiting his arrival. They discussed the final points of his memory wipe, then he jacked out and Pirathonite piloted the Nosferatu, his new command ship, to the machine power stations.
The last thing Milton K. Friedman saw as a redpill was the red liquid slowly rise to fill his pod before his head jack activated, anaesthetics filled his body, and his memory was rewritten.
*****
He went back to his old life. His memory was replaced entirely - the machines had crafted in exquisite detail an entire year of memories relating to economic field work in another country. Viola, who had spent that year hoping her husband was not dead, had her own subtle memory revamp to overlay the time spent mourning and replace it with time spent missing. There was even a weeklong "memory" they had given her in which John consoled her and the two almost started an affair; then, John died in a car accident.
The Friedman's whereabouts in Megacity are kept secret by the Blue Order and the Watchmen, organizations that agreed to help protect Kellner once he was reinserted. Nothing more is known, except that Milton can be contacted via AIM on the screen name MKFriedman79.
((So ha! Posting from beyond the grave! If I get access to my PC over the summer, I will return, I hope. Otherwise, I'll have to wait until Fall. Regardless, I'm still up for the occasional bluepill chat.))
