What's your favorite feel-good movie:
What I mean by this is what movie makes you feel good after watching it. I don't mean what's your favorite "Beaches" clone. (which does nothing for me by the way. I'd rather jab myself in the leg with a hot poker than watch it again.)
For me it's an old Jimmy Stewart flick called Harvey.
www.imdb.com/title/tt0042546/
Started out as a pulitzer prize winning play and made into a brilliant movie.
It's brilliant. Mr. Dowd ... Elwood P. (jimmy stewart) is perhaps the most charming and nice person to ever live. Not that he's aware of it of course. Oh.. and he likes a drink. Only now and then of course. *wink* Thing is .. he's got this invisible friend called Harvey. What he calls a Pooka. A six foot and three and one half inches tall rabbit. With a hat. His sister doesn't think much of that and in her well-meaning but busy-body way tries to have him committed to get him some help. And then there is his odd niece who can't have any gentlemen callers because she's scared they'll find out her uncle is loopy. And the Judge of course. The poor judge. lol. Confusion and Hilarity insues while Mr. Dowd goes about his pleasant way inviting everyone he meets to diner engagements and/or a drink 'downtown'.
Why I like this movie: It's like .. there is a secret joke just between Jimmy, you, and Harvey. Somehow everyone misses the things you see. Turning at the wrong time. Not really paying attention to what Mr. Dowd is saying. Failing to connect the dots. Or the odd things they are pondering suddenly get lost in the distractions. Everyone is so wrapped up in thier own problems they miss the nice time that Mr. Dowd ... Elwood P. ... and Harvey, and you of course, are having. Starts out comedy. Becomes a great Drama. Ends on a high note.
The talent involved in this movie is amazing. There are names in this movie that were huge in the day.
And Mr. Dowd ... Elwood P. ... really is a charming and nice fellow. I'd buy him a drink at 'Charlies'. Harvey too.
I hear Tom Hanks is going to remake this. He is about the only person I can think of that could possibly pull it off the way Mr. Stewart did.
I give this movie six stars out of five.
