I want to take a moment to explain my decision about Rift as the new mmo home for us. I should have done this speechifying a while ago. My bad.
Let me start by saying playing Rift is NOT required to be in the guild. If you don't want to play Rift, that's cool. I get it.
Okay, on to the Why...
It wasn't just about votes. It's not about what's the best game. It's not about which game looks best. It's not about what game has the best combat system.
It was about a couple of things.
1: A sense of community.
Yes we are a community. One with a long history. But we also need to bring in new people otherwise this guild will die out eventually. What we have now is a small group of online friends who don't really do much together except chill at this forum. I'm sorry but that is not what we intended years ago when this all started. What we intended, in the beginning, was to help build something where people were welcome and had fun and people weren't being bossed around by other players. Through no fault of my own I ended up in charge of the thing eventually. So I did my best. I made some bad decisions. Put some people in a place they didn't want to be. That's life. Mistakes were made. I'm learning. I wanted to build something that was bigger than just MxO mostly because I could see the writing on the wall the moment SOE took over. I still want that and I think we can do that. But we need to start somewhere ...
2: The votes.
I wanted a sense of where the community was at in terms of what they played. I knew it might lead to some disagreements but it had to be done. Had to! Through the discussion I got a good sense of where we are. It was pretty much three games. The Secret World, Rift, and Star Trek Online. Those were the games were we had a presence. Then I asked people to vote. But that was just asking people to give me what game they would pick. It would give me a better idea of what to do but it was not the only deciding factor.
So why Rift?
That's a tough one. It came down to a few things. The amount of stuff do to. The size of the community. The options for the guild. I also felt that after playing the game for a bit there was room there for a group like ours. A small, newbie friendly, community. A lot of guilds there are all about the Raids and 'progression' (whatever that is. lol.) Don't bother showing up if you aren't l33t kinda thing. Quite frankly there are only a couple other significant guilds on our server that are not like that from what I've read. There is an opportunity there. Yeah.. with the matrix gig it's a bit harder to fit in but it is a large community that I believe has a need we can fill. I may be mistaken. We'll find out. But that's how I feel. Star Trek Online has so many fleets that's it's stupid. I don't see the same possibilities there. The Secret World, while very fun, also does not have the same opportunities for us in my opinion. I could be wrong but I can only forge ahead with what I believe is for the betterment of the guild.
Do I think Rift is the greatest thing since indoor toilets? HELL NO. No, no, and no! There are a lot of things I dislike about Rift. But it's not a horrible game either. I can't say they do anything "out of the box" really, but what they do they do well. I had some difficulty with the interface and soul tree system concepts (just let me pick my powers...) and a few other things. But time changes that. I hold the same opinion about all three games we voted on. Each one has it's strengths and weaknesses. I like all three.
But that doesn't matter.
What matters is us hanging out and having some adventures like we used to. Somewhere... ANYWHERE....
I don't think it matters what game.
I made this decision.
In a hamfisted way that I believe I rarely do. I don't like doing it but it had to be done.
Hopefully in the near future we can open chapters up in the other two games. I'd love to see us in Star Trek and The Secret World but one thing at a time. I'd like to make this work.
To put it as bluntly as I can...
For the good of the Guild.
We expand .. or we die out. It's that simple.
*points at Rift*
We'll start there.
Hopefully this answered some concerns and questions.
