"What the F*** are those Red Eyed bastards doing in this?". Pylat was watching through the scope again, rifle held steadily in his hands, as the chase scene unfolded. He saw the explosion of the grenade Valaro had thrown and began counting, "1.... 2.... 3.... 4", the rumble of sound finally reached him. "Over a kilometer away", he made some small adjustments to his scope, "As good a time as any to set a new sniping record.... now hold still". He carefully led the target by a significant margin, waiting for the right time, finger poised over the trigger.
The gunshot was barely a whisper as a single shot streaked out of the silenced rifle. Pylat watched and waited, time slowed down as the bullet bared down on his target. The window of the car shattered, a fraction of a second later the shot impacted with the driver, blood sprayed throughout the inside of the car which rapidly swerved off the road and crashed. Pylat pulled the bolt on the rifle back and reloaded, never taking his eye from the scope, he watched as Dee steered her car off the highway and entered the Downtown district.
Content that his friends were safe he slung the rifle over his shoulder, turned around and left the room, still littered with bodies. The Lupine he interrogated had talked, it didn't take long...
EichDee let out a deep sigh of relief, she steered the car into some back roads as they surveyed the damage and tended to Karaa's wound, "Tell Pylat that was a damn fine shot Ocelot!". "I would if I knew where he was, he disappeared from my screens just as the Red Eyes showed up, I can't reach him and his phone isn't picking up", Dee squeezed her hands around the wheel, she knew Pylat had a tendency to do this. "Don't bother trying to contact him Ocelot, let's get on with this mission, he'll find us when he wants to, where's the nearest safehouse?".
Dee drove quickly to the coordinates, Karaa was bleeding badly, she clutched her shoulder and winced, she needed to be jacked out soon...

Karaa cursed underneath her breath as Valaro pushed her forward to see the exit wound.
“It went straight through but there’s a lot of blood Kar.”
Karaa’s response was stolen by a painful expulsion of air as Valaro pressed his hand against the wound in her shoulder. “We need to get you jacked out.” Valaro’s voice was calm but Karaa heard the underlining tension there.
Shit, she thought, this must be bad.
Karaa closed her eyes for a moment and told herself: I really haven’t been shot. My body is perfectly fine. I am not bleeding all over Valaro or the nice “not real” leather seats.
Karaa opened her eyes and looked at her shoulder; blood still flowed through Valaro’s fingers.
Karaa sighed; she closed her eyes tighter this time and thought, flesh wound, over and over. When she opened her eyes a moment later, it looked as if the blood was pouring more freely from her body.
Karaa leaned her head back against the head rest and let her eyes drift close once again, I can't win, she thought.
Suddenly she felt a sharp slap against her cheek.
Her eyes flew open and locked onto Valaro’s, “What the hell?” she yelled.
“Stay with us, Kar.”
“I’m not unconscious” she snarled as her left hand reached up to massage the affronted area.
“Then keep your damn eyes open!” Valaro bit out.
EichDee interrupted, “We’re almost at the exit Kar, hang in there.” “What about the contact?” Karaa complained. “We’ll get there” answered Ceege as he worriedly glanced over at her, “just need to get you fixed up.”
Karaa started to feel light headed as the car took a rather sharp turn. She looked over at EichDee, whose frequent glances into the rear view mirror assured her there would be warning if another attack came from behind. Karaa’s vision started to get spotty as she willed her eyes to stay open.
Well, Karaa thought, at the least the car is still in one piece. She groaned, which meant she still had the cleaning rotation…damn it.

Pylat stood in the elevator as it descended to the ground floor, his phone in his left hand and up at his ear, his right hand holding a silver revolver which was pointed directly at the door.
"Is Karaa out of the simulation yet?"
"Pylat! Where the hell have you been? Did you shoot those Red Eyes? What happened when you were fighting the Lupines? Who tipped them off to our location...."
Pylat interrupted "Answer the damn question Ocelot! Is Karaa out of the simulation?"
"Almost, they're in the Industry Square safe house now...." Click... Pylat disappeared from Ocelot's screen again, "God damnit".
The elevator doors opened and revealed an empty foyer, Pylat slipped his phone back into his pocket and drew another revolver, slowly stepping out as his eyes scanned the room. The room was in a state of total neglect, a thick layer of dust coated everything, broken and rotted furniture littered the area, a single lamp hung from the roof, it's flickering light served more as a distraction than an aid. Why do Lupine nests always look like the set of a horror movie? Taking cautious steps he slowly edged along the wall and towards the exit, guns held out and searching for any threat. With each step his shoes kicked up dust and left a clear footprint, Pylat paused, carefully looking over the floor for any sign of movement. He spotted some recent tracks, moving from the entrance and towards him, footprints and handprints. More Lupines... The tracks moved along the floor and next to the wall, towards where Pylat was standing, he looked down and saw them end exactly where he was. Pylat blinked once then looked up, there it was, crouched on the ceiling above him. Pylat threw himself to the side as the Lupine jumped down on him, claws out and screeching, he hit the floor and rolled over his shoulder, springing to his feet and aiming his weapons at the Lupine. Then it was upon him, he was knocked to the floor by the force of the impact and went skidding into the wall, the guns knocked from his hands. Pylats arms instinctively came up to cover his face as the Lupine tore into him, it howled and called forth the nest. He reached out and grabbed it by the throat, squeezing hard to choke off its howl as his other hand grabbed a broken table leg, he swung it up and slammed it into the Lupines face. The wood splintered and broke, stunning the Lupine, long enough for Pylat to pull back and jam the sharp end into the Lupines shoulder and drive him away. He quickly rolled to his side and picked his guns up again, the Lupine tore the stake from his shoulder and threw it at Pylat, Pylat barely had time to duck before the Lupine leaped into him again. He kept a tight hold on his weapons as he was slammed into the floor, he used his forearm to hold the Lupine back as he jammed the revolver into the Lupines chest, unloading all 6 shots into it. Pylat quickly scrambled to his feet as the Lupine fell to the floor, he ran for the exit as a swarm of more Lupines came running into the room.
The moment his feet hit the footpath he took a giant leap, flying into the air and onto the roof of an adjacent building. He didn't stop running, reaching the end of the roof and jumping to the next building. He stopped and turned, gun in both hands, watching for any Lupine that might follow him.
He kept his gun up and pulled out his phone again, "Ocelot, I need an exit".

Meanwhile back in Industry Square
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The car skidded to a stop, and instantly Valaro opened the back of the SUV. He stepped out and looked around quickly. He then closed the door and Ceege exited. Ceege reloading his rifle took defensive position at the door. Valaro walked around to Eichdee's door.
"Stay here and look after Karaa. Theres an exit in here and well make sure the buildings clean. At the first sign of something going wrong turn around and drive! Theres a little place off Chelsea, go there."
Valaro turned and walked up to Ceege drawing a Revolver. It was the same one he always had. Claimed it brought him luck. A gift. It was an 8 shot SAA revolver chrome silver and shone in the sunlight. Valaro kicked open the door and pointed the weapon straight in. Ceege dived inside and cleared the room. It was dark. Musky. A small hue glowed in the background of a fire exit. Both men proceeded in side constantly changing the direction of there weapons, in case there was anyone hiding behind cover.
"Clear Cap" said Ceege
Ceege turned to press the button to call the elevator. Valaro grabbed him by the shoulder. He looked up towards the elevator doors. Above them it said "Floor 2".
"Someone has been here, and is either still here waiting for us or came down the stairs."
Valaro turned and walked through the door beside the elevator. It lead to a stairwell where Valaro crouched against the wall continued aiming and looking up to the next flight. He nodded and Ceege ran up the next set again crouching and looking up to the next. Valaro proceeded up the stairs and took offensive position beside the door. Ceege crouched down and pointed towards the door, ready to blast anything that moved. Valaro opened the door and Ceege rolled through checking all around him.
"Clear" he whispered
Valaro proceeded in to find two doors. Room 135, Room 136. It was a continuation of the apartment block adjacent to the building next to it. Valaro nodded to Ceege to go through the door on the right. Room 135. Valaro then proceeded into Room 136. Valaro entered and found the room in darkness. He walked forward slowly. He heard crackling below him. He stopped and crouched to a low position. Putting his hand to the floor he could feel shards of glass where the light bulb had been smashed. Someone was here. He walked towards the kitchen and quickly pointed his weapon behind the counter. It was clear. There was one door in the room. He reached out towards the door knob to open it, when a loud telephone began ringing behind him. Startling him he turned 180 degrees and pointed towards it. It was the exit telephone where Ocelet was dialling in to retrieve Karaa. Valaro turned to continue clearing the room, when suddenly he was thrown forcefully back as the door crashed open. Valaro kipped up back on his feet and pointed towards the door. A bright light shone out through it where ha shadow stood in the doorway.
"Valaro. We meet face to face and alone at last." said the menacing voice.
Valaro in a crouched low position stepped back keeping his weapon focused on the shadow.
"Oh we've met a few times but, never alone. Although id say your little kiddies are runnin round here somewheres. Am I right?"
Valaro remained silent.
"What say you put away that weapon and we fight with some honour?"
Valaro ignoring the words, fired two bullets directly at the shadowy figure. It didn't even flinch. Valaro's eyes went wide. He then put away the weapon and drew a small blade that extended no more than 6 inches from the palm of his hand. He walked backwards slowly.
"Why don't we skip the introductions and get right to business. Now your pathetic weapons are not really a match for me. And im sure you can handle yourself with a normal fight but, im not a normal person. You all know me as Code Rot, but I have a name. Like I said though skip the introductions and get to business."
The figure began stepping towards Valaro when bullets flew through the wall. Plaster chipped into tiny pieces revealing small beams of light from the next apartment. Suddenly the wall almost disintegrated as Ceege jumped through the wall, rolled onto his feet and trained his weapon towards Code Rot. Valaro looking towards Ceege smirked a little.
"Impeccable timing."
"You know me Cap"
Both men now looked towards Code Rot. He was standing in the same position wearing a huge suit of armour. It seemed to protect him from bullets and would make hand to hand combat extremely difficult.
"Think we should go now Ceege." shouted Valaro rolling backwards.
Valaro and Ceege turned and jumped towards a window right in front of them. Seconds later a large explosion went off on the floor they were on. Valaro landed right on his back, after loosing control due to the blast. Seconds later Ceege came running from behind a corner, from where he had landed. He helped Valaro to his feet and both men turned to see a woman with a grenade launcher in her hands.
"What you think I would leave you two behind. I'm not just the kick ass driver you know" exclaimed Eichdee.
"Ok lets go, before backup arrives."
"Uh Cap, this guy doesn't seem to die when he explodes."
All three of the operatives looked up at the building which had been torn apart by the blast. There standing was Code Rot still encased in his armour.
"That armour is impressive." said Ceege.
"Ok we got to get out of here and get Karaa to a hardline, or she'll bleed out. She doesn't have long" shouted Valaro jumping into the vehicle.
The car sped off quickly towards Chelsea where the nearest exit was, and the last safe place for the Tiger in Downtown...

Karaa was barely aware of her surroundings. She moved in and out of consciousness as she heard doors opening and closing and the car stopping and then starting once again.
"Karaa?"
Her mind couldn’t focus on her name, yet the person kept saying it over and over.
Karaa felt deep under water…everything was blurred and wavy. She couldn’t hear anything properly. All the sounds were similar to the adults in the T.V. show 'Charlie brown', “Wa WaWaWa Wa.” Her name was the only thing that stood out amongst the babble.
Karaa could feel the car stop again and this time she was being dragged, very carefully across the seats of the SUV. She opened her eyes slowly and was punished for the action by the bright light that assaulted her.
“Karaa?” the voice still sounded like nothing she had heard before.
Karaa tried to focus on the figure in front of her and found green eyes staring at her in concern, a strong jaw set in tension and beautiful ruffled brown hair covering his for forehead. Adrenaline surged into her body as her heart tugged sharply.
“Danny?” she croaked.
“No, Kar, its me...Valaro” he whispered the words but Karaa heard them as if they were shouted at her. The image of Danny disapeared like a wisp of smoke and in its wake stood Valaro. She knew it was impossible for Danny to be here yet she felt her heart sag at the realization.
Karaa felt someone slip under her good shoulder to support her and begin to drag her through a door. She was then placed in a chair, where she slumped against it, ready to topple over into the abyss when she heard the distinct sound of a ringing phone.
The next thing she was aware of was the cold end of a receiver being pressed against her ear as her world turned into complete and utter blackness.

Pylat was alone in his safe house, no one else knew about it, it had long been abandoned and hadn't seen use since his days with the Merovingian. His gun was pointed at the door as he stood next to the phone, waiting for it to ring.
Any minute now....
He heard movement at the end of the hall, scraping along the walls and floors.
Take your time guys, I'm in no rush...
Pylat took one hand off the gun and placed it on the receiver, waiting for the phone call to get him out of the simulation. There was a banging at the door, he could see it start to splinter at the hinges. Pylat looked around the room for possible exits, Ocelot was cutting it very fine.
Well there's always the window, 40 floors is preferable to having my face eaten
The door buckled in the middle, wood and splinters flying out. Finally, it gave way and burst open, dozens of Lupines on the other side, there was a short pause as they stared each other down, Pylat took another look at the window. Just then the phone rang, the Lupines sprinted forward through the door. Pylat picked up the phone as he unloaded his pistol into the charging mob, holding it to his ear and feeling himself transported out. The leading Lupine jumped forward at Pylat as he disappeared, it flew through him and crashed into the wall as Pylats gun fell through is translucent hand and clattered to the floor.
Pylats eyes opened to see the familiar metal decks of The Tiger, "Damnit Ocelot, were you just waiting for dramatic timing there? Where's Karaa?". "She's in the mess getting a drink to calm her nerves, that was a close ca....", Pylat had already lifted himself out of the chair and was walking across the room, cutting Ocelot off, "A thankyou would be nice!". Pylat stepped into the door to the mess hall, he saw Karaa sitting at a table alone with an untouched glass of water in front of her, still nursing her shoulder and wincing in pain. She looked up at Pylat and still managed a smile despite her miserable demeanor. Pylat beckoned Karaa with a finger, she finally took a sip of her drink before standing and walking to Pylat, "What are you doing.....", he cut her off, "We need to talk".
Pylat grabbed Karaa's wrist and began dragging her towards her quarters, Karaa stumbled along behind him as she was pulled along. He stepped into her quarters, leading Karaa in behind him, and closed the door, "Everything you say in this room will not leave this room, you have my word. But if you hold back any information any longer, you will not be welcome on this ship, or any of our ships, ever again, understand?".

Karaa stared at Pylat at first in shock at his threat and then confusion at his request.
“Pylat, what are you talking about?” she asked incredulously.
“You know exactly what I am talking about.” His voice showed no emotion and she realized she wasn’t talking to a friend but a captain of Zion.
Karaa regained control of her emotions and let a mask of disinterest fall over her features.
“A lot has happened lately, Captain Pylat, you will need to be more specific.” Karaa's voice held no inflection, it was compelety devoid of any emotion. Pylat neither moved from his position in front of her door nor did he speak.
“Shall I guess then?” Karaa whispered, suddenly feeling extremely tired. Pylat still showed no sign that he even heard her, he just watched her evenly.
“Where to begin…” said Karaa mused. “Well, I have been having really horrible nightmares lately…you know the kind…where your not sure if your awake…not what your referring to? Let’s try this then, sometimes when I jack into the matrix I experience pains that nearly crash my system.” Karaa let the information hang in the air between them. It took all her willpower to keep herself from pacing the room.
“That’s not what I’m talking about Karaa.”
Karaa sighed, “How that my dead boyfriend is not actually dead?” She paused a moment and then added, “But you knew that last one, didn’t you?”
“Karaa-“ he started to say but she interrupeted him, “Pylat, I am not hiding anything…my crew knows everything there is to know about me.”
“I have information that I got from a Lupine.” He said hesitantly. Karaa waited for him to continue but he showed no sign of doing so. She felt like shaking him until his teeth rattled in his head. What is he hiding? She wondered, what is he afraid to ask?
“I don’t have any ties with Lupines.” Karaa answered flatly.
She waited but he gave no more information as to why he had dragged her into her room and threatened her with removal from the pride. What could he be thinking?
“My body still thinks that I’m suffering from blood loss” she started out slowly, “… maybe its affecting my ability to comprehend what you’re asking, please just ask your question…I can’t think of anything else.” Karaa couldn’t help but let her irritiation seep into her voice. Pylat knew her. Karaa would never do anything to jeporaize The Pride or Zion.
The room was silent after her declaration…the stillness unnerved her. This was not the Pylat she knew but then again she had never been on his bad side. Karaa sighed, there was only one thing else that came to mind. Suddenly she felt very old, ancient in fact. Karaa moved across the room and sat on her bed. She leaned her head against the side wall and stared at the floor.
“Does it have something to do with SC?” Karaa asked despondently.

((Couldn't sleep so I figured I would post lol. The underwear comment pertaining to Caius belongs to Dee and not myself. Enjoy.))
“I’m talking about Caius and the phone he gave you.” Pylat’s deep voice seemed to penetrate every corner of Karaa’s small room.
Karaa made sure not to betray any emotion but she was reeling from shock. How did he know about that? How did the lupines know about that? The questions assaulted her as she answered.
“I’m not sure how that concerns you, Pylat.” Karaa said carefully.
“It concerns me” Pylat said rather nonchalantly at first but as he continued his voice got increasingly harsher, “because he is behind Rsy’s kidnapping. Because he is working with Phellan. Because he is with the Lupines who have been attacking us.”
His apathy disappeared. He was a captain protecting his crew…from her. That truth hit her hard, he thought that she was capable of….betraying the pride.
He took a deep breath and met her gaze, “Karaa why did he give you that phone?”
“A line to the dead.” Her voice was low but direct.
“What?” Pylat said incredulously.
“That’s what Caius called it. I used it once…to talk to Danny. Caius also sent schematics of the building Valaro and Ceege were being held at so that Dee and I could get in.”
“Why would he do that?” Pylat asked.
Karaa shook her head slowly,” I have no idea. I didn’t know Caius aligned himself with the lupines.” Karaa sighed, “He is known for switching sides as much as he changes his underwear.”
Pylat held Karaa’s gazed, he could see the dark circles that made her green eyes appear lighter than they actually were and how her clothes hung off her loosely where they hadn’t before, he saw how she ran her fingers through her hair…a sign that she was under stress. Pylat dropped his eyes to the floor, Karaa was exhausted, and she was pushing herself passed her limits…not caring of the consequences to her health.
“I honestly don’t know anything else about Caius. And if I knew where Rsy was, I wouldn’t be here talking to you or participating in a pointless pursuit for the pins to get his location.”
“There is nothing you wouldn’t do for Danny.” He whispered as he looked up from his examination of her floor.
“Are you saying that Danny has something to do with this?” She asked slowly.
“No” Pylat said simply “Just that if you thought it would get you Danny, that you would do anything.”
Karaa didn’t saying anything to Pylat’s statement. That use to be true, was it still? Would she do anything for him? Pylat’s voice interrupted Karaa’s thoughts as she tried to assess her own ability to betray the pride…like Pylat thought she would.
“When we thought Danny died, I never saw anyone...” Pylat paused trying to gather his thoughts, “I never saw anyone take a lost like that. It was like you lost everything you ever cared about, it was like you had no family, no friends…like you were completely alone in the world… like we…,your faction, weren’t even there. It…completely changed you, Karaa. You went from fun loving and a little crazy” a ghost of a smile crossed his face before it disappeared into a grimaced as he continued,“to taking calculated suicidal risks and being reckless. You didn’t even seem human at times.”
Pylat took a deep breath that was loud in the small room, “I was there, Karaa, I saw you fall apart” his voice was low but when he spoke next his voice was louder, “I saw you fall and I couldn’t do anything to help you.”
He paused, “I know that Danny meant everything to you and now that he is back… I know that if you think you can help him…you would betray everything you stand for.”
Karaa stood in the middle of her room and stared at Pylat. She felt like she couldn’t get her lungs to work. It was too much, all of this was but there was nothing she could do. Pylat’s concerns, though heartbreaking, were legitimate. He was protecting, what she could no longer protect herself in absolute terms. He was protecting the pride, he was protecting her family.
“And you’re here to judge my intentions.” She answered, trying to keep the pain she felt out of her voice.
“No, I’m here to help you, where I couldn’t before. Tell me what is going on” he begged,” If you lie to me, I won’t be able to catch you, Karaa, none of us will.”
Karaa glanced up at the ceiling and focused on the intricate sets of pipes and metal that covered it.
“Danny left me.” The breath escape her lungs with those words, “He has been alive this entire time” her voice cracked but she continued “and I didn’t know it. I would have died believing that. What person…could do that to someone they love?”
She returned her gaze to Pylat, “Thinking he was dead…was worse than any torture” she swallowed hard, “any pain that I have ever experience.”
Pylat returned her stare as if he was preparing himself to be hit.
“Karaa, if you had to make a choice…” He began.
“I would choose Zion; I would stand with the pride.” She answered automatically.
Pylat acted as if he hadn’t heard her. “If you had to choose between Danny or the pride…how would you?”
Karaa was quiet a long time before finally answering, “The same way I would make that decision for any of my faction members.”
Pylat nodded as if he was expecting that answer and looked at a point over her shoulder as he spoke, not meeting her eyes, “There is a point with comradery that you choose what is better for the whole rather than what is best for the individual. With love, however, there is no point…there is no line you wouldn’t cross for that person.”
Suddenly his eyes refocused on her, this was the important question. This question that he was about to ask her, would decide if she would be allowed to leave this room. This was the question he didn’t want to know the answer to but had to ask.
“Karaa…will you draw a line?”

Karaa brought her eyes up slowly to meet Pylat’s. His seemed almost black with the dim light, dark and bottomless.
“The line has already been drawn.” Karaa said softly, trying to reassure him…and herself.
“Karaa-“ He began, but she cut him off, she had enough.
Karaa’s hand shot out and pushed Pylat, harder than she intended to. He stumbled backwards against the wall. “I am an agent of the pride’s will. “
She glanced down at her hand on his chest and let it drop to her side. “If you are that unsure as to where my allegiance lies, then throw me in the brig. I’ve had enough of your questions.”
Karaa stepped back and reached for the door. Pylat grabbed her wrist, “I’m trying to do the right thing Karaa. You were my crew long before the tiger. You will always be my responsibility. I-I can’t let anything happen to the pride. That includes you.”
There was a long pause before Karaa answered, Her voice was low, defeated.
“I understand….I won’t disappoint.”
She pulled the door open and stepped out into the hallway. Pylat didn’t stop her as she made her way back to her abandon cup of water.
Karaa threw herself down onto the bench in the empty mess hall.
This was all too much.
After a moment, she took a deep breath and laid her head down on the cool table. Karaa stared at the almost untouched glass of water in front of her. She smirked as she thought of an old song from one of her favorite bands. The smile slowly faded as her mind drifted towards Danny.
Her voice was a rough whisper as she sang brokenly, “If you were dead or still alive, I don’t care, I don’t care. Just go and leave this all behind, I swear, I don’t care….”

PYLAT!! Ocelot shouted. Looking at the screens. You want to see this... Pylat rushed to ocelot and said a little harder than necessary: What do you want this time. Ocelot stayed quiet as he could not believe his eyes. Pylat looked and could not believe his eyes either... The first 5 floors of the building Pylat was in a few minutes earlier were completely on fire and the building was close to collapsing. Quickly they noticed one RSI fleeing the scene. It can't be. "Impossible" Pylat muttered. "RSI signature detected" the computer said. It's Rsy... unbelievable... They both stared at the screen as if they were waiting for a confirmation of some sort. Karaa walked in. Looked at the screen and her mouth fell open.
The phone rang. Ocelot picked up...
"Operator" ocelot said still not really believing that it could be Rsy.
"Ocelot, is that you? Good to hear your voice" Rsy said quickly. "Rune doesn't answer, and I need a exit... FAST!"
"Acebie is still on your ship, Rune is on the Tiger, Radomir is... " Ocelot stopped as he realized Rsy didn't know of radomir's death yet.
"I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR SMALL TALK" Rsy Shouted "I NEED an EXIT... AND FAST"
"Yeah sure let me patch you to Ace..." Ocelot couldn't finish the sentence as Pylat grabbed the headset and started yelling to Rsy. "Where the HELL have you been and why did you take so long to get back here..."
"Shut up Pylat" Rsy said quickly still running away from the collapsing building. "Good to hear your voice too. Is Karaa there? Is she ok?
Pylat answered "Yes, but not..."
"Good, don't harm her, it was not her fault and tell her: Danny loves... no I'll tell her when i get back... Is Acebie ready?" Rsy was getting tired quickly.
"Do you need help?" Pylat asked as he suddenly noticed all the lupines that were after him a moment ago, were now chasing Rsy.
"Yes..." Rsy answered, allmost out of breath

Karaa stared at the monitor for another moment, pushing her hair out of her face, before looking over ocelet’s head at Pylat. He slowly turned to meet her gaze, his face an emotionless mask.
“Ready to jack in?” He asked.
Karaa nodded releasing a breath she didn’t realize she was holding, “Hell yeah, I’m ready.”
Pylat moved around her and began to initiate the jack in procedure.
Karaa glanced back at the monitor and was about to move away when she caught her reflection in one of the unused screens.
Her shirt hung loosely on her, the edges had fallen to her shoulders so you could see her black tank underneath. Karaa's hair had gotten longer, falling passed her shoulders. But none of this is what held her attention.
She stared for a moment, What is that expression?, she wondered.
Karaa lifted her hand to reach out but when she realized what she was doing, she quickly ran her hand through her hair instead and gave it a rough shake.
“Karaa, we’re ready!” Pylat called to her. “Ocelet, let the others know. Tell them to hurry. “ Karaa said as she threw herself down into the chair. “ Way ahead of you. ” Ocelet held the jack in her hand. Karaa nodded and closed her eyes as ocelet moved behind her.
What was that expression? The answer tickled her mind but she couldn’t find the right word.
She heard Ocelet jack in Pylat before the operator turned to Karaa, “Your turn Karaa.”
Then EichDee busted into the room and paused finding Ocelet, “is it really true?”
At hearing EichDee's voice, Karaa opened her eyes.
“Monitors don’t lie, Dee.” Ocelet gave her a wry grin.
EichDee took the steps two at a time, when she reached a chair she began pushing buttons, “I’m right behind you, Kar.”
“See you on the other side.” Karaa said.
Then it hit her. The expression Karaa saw in her reflection was Hope. She squeezed her eyes closed tight when Ocelet inserted the jack, it was almost painful. It was something you never got use to but the feeling was fleeting.
Karaa felt raindrops hit her face and her eyes flew open. Megacity was looking more depressing than usual.
“We’re in.”
Karaa looked behind her to see Pylat closing his cell phone and slipping it into his pocket.
“Of course it’s raining." Pylat sighed and shook his head once
Karaa smirked, “It does wonders for your personality.”
Pylat rolled his eyes and walked over to the edge of the building. Karaa hesitated before following, the expression she saw reflected in the monitor…it could've been desperation. The thought chilled her insides.
Pylat looked over his shoulder at her, raising one eyebrow as if to say, what the hell are you doing?
Karaa gave herself a mental shake and moved to stand beside him. The building wasn’t very tall by megacity standards, only 5 stories. Karaa scanned the streets below them, “I don’t see him…” She mumbled.
Suddenly, sounds of gunfire broke out to their left, the scene obscured by buildings and billboards.
“We don’t need to see him,” Pylat grumbled, “he’s making enough noise.”

Karaa landed hard on the roof, her knees bending from the impact, cracking the cement underneath her.
Karaa’s head snapped up as she scanned the area. The rain had gotten heavier, her hair was plastered to her face, falling out of her bun in wavy slick tendrils. Her clothes stuck to her in a disheveled mess.
The sound of gunfire had stopped and that worried her.
Karaa straightened and ran toward the ledge. The streets were empty. Strange, she thought.
Karaa leaned more fully over the ledge and caught sight of a white coat hooked on a fence down the block. Beyond the fence was a vacant lot.
Because thats not obvious at all....
Karaa heard a crack behind her and a few moments later Pylat stood next to her.
“I forget how fast you are….”
Karaa pointed toward the end of the street at the fence with the flapping white coat.
“Street empty and Rsy’s coat. I guess, “subtly” is not a requirement for the lupines.”
Pylat smirked, “or it could be that he shed it while on the run.”
More cracks and Eichdee and Valaro were beside them. Valaro took one look in the direction of the fence and looked back towards the others, “What are you two just standing around for? Let’s go!”
Before, Karaa or Pylat could say anything, Valaro was already throwing himself over the edge and landing in a crouch on the ground below.
Karaa looked at EichDee and raised a delicate eyebrow in question.
“He just wants answers.” EichDee said, sounding tired.
Karaa looked back at Pylat and was surprised to see him staring at her. His eyes were stern.
He still has doubts about me, Karaa realized. She pushed the thought aside and stepped up onto the ledge.
Karaa sighed and said, “As do we all.”

"Operator!!"
"I'm here, Rsy"
"What's keeping them, Ocelot. Can't they see me."
"Your still fast, Rsy They're having a hard time keeping up."
"Tell them to go to Park east. I'll meet them there."
"But that's near the government building, are you..."
"I know where it is... Don't worry about Agents, they won't be there. Now Move!!!"
"Pylat is on his way. Karaa, Dee and Valaro are with him. Acebie and JJ are standing by on the Cheetah."
"Rsy... about Radomir. He's..."
"I know, Ocelot. I know... I'll see you soon."
"Ocelot? Can someone get me my coat back, I used it in a diversion"

Karaa pressed her back against the wall, her drench coat caught at the uneven surface. This day felt different, something about the people, the buildings, the ground, even the air….it was all different. It was as if she was hyper aware of her surroundings, even though it was pouring and everything was grey…the colors stood out as they hadn’t before. The edges were sharp.
Karaa took a deep breath and reached into her coat, pulling out her sleek black glock and pointing it around the corner as she followed it.
This day was different. She couldn't get that thought out of her head.
She crouched along the rooftop and hid behind the raised edge. Karaa could see Rsy’s coat on the fence, its movements seemed more violent close up. She glanced to the side of the building and saw Valaro and EichDee, weapons raised as they rounded the corner and made their way to the coat.
Pylat was around, Karaa couldn’t see him but she knew he took the alley behind the building she was on.
EichDee reached the coat first when Karaa’s phone vibrated in her pocket. Karaa shoved her hand into her coat and fished out the cell phone. She pressed the cold metal against her ear. “Kar, I just heard from Rsy—“ Karaa interrupted Ocelet in disbelief, “What? Where is he? We found his coat-“ Now it was Ocelet's turn to interrupt, “Karaa! Rsy used that as a diversion to get the lupines off his trial, your walking into a--” Karaa didn’t need to hear the rest of what Ocelet was trying to say, she shoved her phone back into her pocket and pulled herself up and over the ledge of the building. Karaa landed, crouched, with a crack on the cement below, gun raised.
“Dee!” Karaa yelled.
Just then a lupine crashed through a window above her, karaa watch as the woman sailed overhead and slid to a stop in front of her. The woman smiled and it made her look even more feral. Karaa pulled the trigger and the silver bullet flew into the woman’s chest, she stumbled back and grabbed at the wound but after a moment the woman straighten and laughed, “Not this time, cave crawler.” She growled.
Karaa’s eyes widen in disbelief as the lupine launch herself forward. Karaa quickly aimed her gun at the woman's head and fired.

- Here we are, said Angelis, parking the car on the side of the street.
It was one of the busy avenues of the Canerro district in northern downtown. Red pills were very rarely there, since it was in the heart of the machine network, meaning there was practically no hardline anywhere near. That's why they had to risk taking the highway to get there. The firefight didn't go as planned, but it would've been far worse if Pylat hadn't helped them out. Karaa still got injured pretty badly though, and that was hard for the two men to just accept and just continue on.
- Man, I hope Karaa's alright, sighed Ceege, getting out of the car. - She'll be just fine, reassured Angelis. Karaa is used to getting hit in the shoulder every day. - Yeah, what's up with that? It's like her weak point or something? - That little girl sure has nice shoulders, that's for sure. - Haha, yeah… I still worry about her, Ceege added, a concerned look on his face. - Me too. But we have a job to do.
The two men nodded, and proceeded into the apartment building quickly to avoid being completely drowned in the rain. It was actually a very nice looking place. Zionites were so used to roaming around Richland and Westview so much, visiting the northern part of Downtown felt almost like a vacation to an exotic, foreign place. The building was polished almost like marble, and shown no sing of age whatsoever. The entire district was like that, actually. The many avenues were separated by trees, and the area held many parks. I might've actually lived here, if I had stayed in the shitty dream world that is this place thought Angelis to himself.
When they arrived to the glass door, they couldn't help but notice it had not a single finger mark, or anything similar. It was completely clean, like they had just disinfected the whole thing. Ceege let out a long whistle.
- Damn this place is clean! - Tell me about it… I bet you 10 bucks it smells like a dentist's office in there. - Oh yuck, I hate that smell, Ceege chuckled as he pinched his nose.
They opened the first of the two doors, before they arrived to the locked one. On their left was a panel with bells for all the apartments. There were dozens. They had to find a certain Andre. He was an exile living comfortably, far away from the fighting of the simulation. He was also rumored to be very paranoid, so it was possible he wouldn't just open the door. Normally there would be five Zionites right now, but Dee and Valaro decided to accompany Karaa back to The Real.
Before he could say anything, Angelis' phone rang, making a weird echo in the lobby. He picked it up from inside his pocket and brought it to his ear.
- Angelis. - Angelis, it's Val!
His voice was muffled, but it seemed like he was talking loud. He was probably running or jumping over buildings and the wind was what made the whole thing sound distorted.
- Captain, how is Karaa? he asked while putting the phone on speaker for Ceege to hear. - She's okay, we're already back in the simulation, he answered, apparently panting. - What?! screamed Ceege. Already?! It's only been an hour! - I know, but something came up. Rather, someone came up. Rassy is back. - What?! the two men cried in one voice. When?! How?! - We're not sure, he just popped out of a flaming building. We're following him right now. - Want backup, Cap? asked Ceege. - No, we should be alright. Pylat and Dee are also here so we're okay. Keep heading towards that Andre guy. - We're already here. - Good. (there was a short pause) Listen, something came up, I'll have to get back to you.
Angelis closed his phone, smirked at Ceege and gave him a pat on the shoulder. Ceege smiled, and nodded.
* * *
- You were right, Ang. It does smell like a dentist's office. Yuuuck… - So you owe me $100? - Funny.
They had just come out of the elevator on the fifth floor. The entire hallway was filled with blue carpet that almost looked like it was made of silk. The lights above resembled little chandeliers, with fake light bulb candles. It almost seemed like a five-star hotel.
- How much do you think it costs to live here? asked Ceege, his head tilting in every direction. - Probably too much for us. Let's not linger, unless we want to be spotted by the machines. They're on our side, but I bet they won't like us being here. - Right.
They finally got to the door they were looking for. 521. This is it. When they rang the bell downstairs, the door buzzed without even being asked who it was. Quite unorthodox for a paranoid man to just let anyone in like that. It was probably a trap, and they both knew it. Instinctively, they pressed their backs against the walls on each side of the door, handguns in hand. Angelis knocked, expecting some kind of shotgun blast through the wooden door.
Instead, the door simply opened, revealing a big man in his late-40s, wearing a long black beard and a red checkered shirt. He sort of looked like a lumberjack, come to think of it. He gazed at the two men hiding behind the walls, popping their heads into the doorway, like they were afraid of the man. He simply shrugged and showed them the way in.
- You must be from Zion, he said in a deep voice. Come in.
Angelis and Ceege threw confused gazes at each other, and after a short hesitation, they entered the man's apartment. The place had a minty smell to it, and the air was fresh. The man led them to the living room, where a large bay window gave a very nice view to the city's skyscrapers a few miles from there. If it wasn't raining so much outside, the view would've been majestic.
- Please, take a seat, said the man waving towards the leather sofas. - T-thanks... began Angelis, not too sure of what he had to do. - Do you want coffee? asked the big man. A beer maybe? - Oooh, a beer would be good! smiled Ceege with a hand clapping. - No thanks, answered Angelis with a stronger voice than Ceege. - Aww… complained the young man as he sat down on the couch.
The big man returned to the living room with a bottle of beer in his hand, and sat down on the adjacent armchair. Awfully polite for a paranoid guy. For almost a minute, the only sound that could be heard in the room was the banging of the rain against the window. Angelis eventually broke the ice.
- I-I'm sorry, but are you Andre? - I am. - We… were told you were a bit… huh… - Crazy, completed Ceege nonchalantly. - Not crazy, corrected Angelis. But a bit paranoid perhaps? - Who told you that? - You know what? Not important. How did you know we were coming?
Andre smiled with all his teeth and drank a sip of his beer.
- Because my old pal Phellan is causing trouble from what I hear, so I figured you guys would pop up at my doorstep any time soon. Seeing as I used to work with the guy, a long time ago. - You don't need to know the full story, but let's just say we suspect he did something very hum, bad… And now he's trying to turn us into rats in a maze? - Oh, I see. He got you running after some of his pins? - You know about that? asked Ceege for the both of them. - It's his little game. He does it once in a while. I tell you, that guy is crazy. Plays with your mind, distracts you from your purpose so he can have his own way. - He's a lupine... you're not. How did you get to work with him? - He worked for me actually. I was part of a broker organization, who exchanged information about everything for money. I had quite the range of contacts. All legitimate, really. Well, as legitimate as it can be in a place like this. - So… he was one of your agents? asked Angelis. - You could say that. You could also say I trusted him with most of my information. I usually didn't like lupines and shit like that, but he was a good guy. Weird, but good. Until six months ago; I guess he had enough of being under me. Killed my wife, and stabbed me three times in the chest, right were my heart is supposed to be. - Supposed to be? asked Ceege, an eyebrow lifted.
Andre smirked, and opened his shirt. On his chest, besides the hair, was severe scarring that looked like he was stabbed with a very big knife. But the marks were right where a human heart was; as deep as they went, there was no way he could've survived it. He buttoned up his shirt again.
- I may not be a lupine, but that doesn't mean I'm human either. He didn't know that. Lucky me. And it wasn't a knife, by the way. It was a meat cleaver.
Angelis and Ceege shivered at the idea. Getting hit three times right in the chest by a meat cleaver could not have been a beautiful experience.
- Ok, so we're dealing with a maniac, said Ceege. That much we already knew. - We want to know if he was working with anyone else besides you, someone that could maybe have aided him, asked Angelis in return. - Well there was this one guy, creepy as hell. Use to hang around with Phellan all the time. Never saw his face. He wore those creepy bandages, and coughed all the time. - Was his name Thanatos? sighed Angelis, his hand on his mouth in desperation. - Yeah, I think that was it. Thanatos. Never liked the guy. Never understood why Phellan spent time with him. Until he tried to kill me, that is.
Angelis threw a tired look at Ceege, who sighed. They had what they came for.
