Zapstrap glared at the hovercraft disappearing over the horizon. His orders were clear but for some reason the fleet flagship had sent a signal from where it hovered on the horizon.
"Sir?" A young captain looked at the command chair questioningly.
"You heard me." He whispered quietly but loud enough to be heard by the Captain sitting near his right arm.
"Yes sir." The captain replied just as quietly and turned back to the controls at his finger tips. He was but one of many working diligently around the command center of Believer Base. "That ship, which is actually decommisioned and in storage, has authorization to .. um .. do whatever the hell it wants. If it is ever actually recommisioned. Which it is not."
"And we had a security malfunction in two minutes which erased all flight data concerning a recent lauch of a mining hovercraft." Zapstrap continued to whisper to the questioning captain sitting nearby. "I don't know what's going on but that's the official version of what happened."
"Yes sir." The Captain worked deftly at his controls before speaking loudly. "Oh my .. Sir.. it appears that we are having a security malfunction and we lost all the data regarding the recent mining hovercraft launch."

Taka sat quietly in what used to be his quarters on the Binary.
Amazing. Looks about the same as I left it.
It had been a week since Taka had been picked up from the desert by the Binary. He traveled that horrible surface for months before, by chance, finding a crashed hovercraft. Their beacon was still intact. It only took a few minutes before Taka configured the beacon to transmit on Believer frequencies and get the message out.
However, his plan didn't go quite as he had envisioned.
6 months prior
"We're closing in, Taka. The information you got from Leelia just might get us close enough." came Livewire's voice.
"Understood. Initiating Aaroun's trojan in the passcode reply."
Using the machine code from Leelia, as well as a trojan horse program written by Aaroun, Taka had hoped to get within the Machine network and get the PL-47 information before the machines were any the wiser. It was a high risk mission, one that put both his life and Livewire's life at great risk.
"Something's.....not right."
Taka didn't respond to Live's worry. He was too busy staring out the front windows, watching as the sentinels began to close the distance.
"Live....get to the Susano! We've been detected!"
She leaped to her feet and began running towards the aft of the ship. Taka began the timer on the EMP. He knew this might happen, and wanted to be prepared.
As he climbed into the Susano, Live was configuring the engines just as he had described. The primary core was deactivated, the secondary core was running at full capacity.
"We warmed up, Live?"
"Aye!"
"Get us the hell out of here!"
The Susano ripped from the aft of the main hovercraft, speeding away from 01 at highest possible speed. Not five seconds after their departure, the EMP detonated.
"EMP shielding holding on the secondary core, Taka. We've got enough space to escape."
"Good. Fire up the primary core and get us back to Believer Base."
"...."
"Live, get that primary core online!"
"...it's nonresponsive, Taka. I can't get it online."
Taka's heart filled with dread. The secondary core, while protected with his new EMP shielding, could only last for about ten minutes, five for the speed they were flying. If they couldn't get the traditional core up and running, they were screwed.
"God help us."
3 days later
He was lucky to survive the crash. The basic supplies on the Susano were extremely limited. It was designed as a combat craft, not a transport craft. There was no food or medical equipment, and only a meager supply of water and a condenser.
But Livewire.....
She survived the crash, but was injured. There were a series of gashes across her face and chest. Taka did what he could to clean them, but it was apparent that infection had set in. And without any type of medical supplies, any chance of her surviving was slim.
She committed suicide the following night.
That morning, Taka buried her, mourning all the while. He held a small memorial service in her honor.
Upon closer inspection, Taka discovered that the lichen that grows so well in the extremely moist environment that is the desert was edible. It wasn't very nutrious, probably lacking major proteins, but it was something.
It became apparent that staying where he was was suicide. Therefore, he began his travels across the desert, hopefully towards Believer Base, dragging a condenser behind him.
Present day
It was his fault. His curiosity, as well as his ambition, was the downfall of the mission. Not to mention responsible for the death of Livewire.
He hadn't spoken much with the crew since he was brought back onboard. He requested that he be submitted to "matrix therapy", or simulated peaceful scenes created by a construct. He has been undergoing nearly 8 hours of this therapy every day.
He still couldn't believe how awry it all went......and it was all his fault.
